Middle school can be a big transition—for students and families alike. The Whitford PTO is here to help you find guidance, resources, and support so your student can thrive.

1. When to Contact Your Student’s Counselor

Your student’s counselor is a great first point of contact for a variety of situations:

• Academic concerns: grades, study skills, scheduling questions

• Social-emotional support: friendships, stress, anxiety, or behavioral concerns

• Conflict resolution: peer or teacher conflicts

• Transition support: moving to middle school, adjusting to new teachers or routines

Tip: If you notice a sudden change in mood, behavior, or academic performance, reach out sooner rather than later.

2. Belonging & Inclusion

At Whitford, every student deserves to feel seen, supported, and included. The PTO’s Equity Advisory Board works to provide tools and resources for families to have critical conversations with their students about diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Ways we support belonging:

• Hosting Town Halls for families to learn and share perspectives

• Offering resources to help families talk with students about empathy, respect, and cultural awareness

• Promoting programs and initiatives that celebrate diversity and help all students feel connected

Our goal is a school community where every student knows they belong and every family feels welcome.

3. Community and Family Resources

Sometimes support extends beyond the school walls. Here are some common areas families might seek help:

• Mental health services and counseling

• Academic tutoring or homework support

• Food, clothing, or financial assistance programs

• Family workshops or parenting support groups

Supporting middle schoolers at home can make a huge difference:

• Create a consistent homework and study routine

• Encourage open conversations about school, friendships, and feelings

• Help your student manage time and responsibilities with planners or checklists

• Celebrate successes—big or small—to boost confidence and motivation

5. Ways to Connect with the PTO

Getting involved with the PTO is another way to support your student and the community:

• Volunteer at events or classroom activities

• Join PTO meetings to stay informed and provide input

• Contribute to fundraising efforts that directly support programs and resources
